Beverly Frederick turned to yoga in 1986 when her professional dancing career was cut short at age 28 by chronic pain. She studied seven years with Judith Lasater, physical therapist, senior Iyengar yoga teacher and author of Living Your Yoga before traveling many times to India, Tibet, and Nepal to study yoga and Buddhism. Other influential teachers have been K. Pattabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Joanna Macy and Thich Nhat Hanh.Read more about Beverly.Yoga Therapy Instructional CD

Every now and then a pleasant surprise in the form of an audio or video presentation shows up in my box at Yoga Journal, reminding me just how many wonderful teachers are out there -- like Beverly Frederick.
Her CD is divided into 8 tracks, varying in length from four to twenty minutes. Track One begins the proceedings with a breath awareness exercise, a short chanted OM, and an unusual and amusing face stretch. Tracks two, six and seven focus, respectively, on standing shoulder stretches several using a strap), reclining hip and thigh stretches, and reclining abdominal strengtheners. Tracks three, four and five are salutations to the Earth, Moon and Sun.
The last of these is familiar to most experienced students, while the first two are short, simple sequences developed by Frederick to "accent balance and connection to the sacred." The final track includes finishing poses (e.g., Bridge and Child's Pose) and relaxation. Since this is a CD, the tracks can be programmed in various ways to create practices that can help relieve ailments (such as back or hip pain), ease overall stress, or build overall strength and flexibility.
Frederick is a most engaging teacher. Her instructions are very specific, and she clearly explains the benefits of the poses not only for the groups of poses on each of the tracks but also for most of the individual poses within each series.
Moreover, she tells us what we might expect to feel when performing certain poses--and how to make adjustments if our experience of the pose tips over what she calls the "yoga edge" where our enjoyment turns to unhappy pain. All along she encourages self-awareness and self-acceptance, curiosity, and a sense of playfulness. These practices are relatively slow and mild and accessible to all levels of students.
