Beverly Frederick turned to yoga in 1986 when her professional dancing career was cut short at age 28 by chronic pain. She studied seven years with Judith Lasater, physical therapist, senior Iyengar yoga teacher and author of "Living Your Yoga" before traveling many times to India, Tibet, and Nepal to study yoga and Buddhism. Other influential teachers have been K. Pattabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Joanna Macy and Thich Nhat Hanh. Ms. Frederick teaches classes and workshops on yoga, wellness, stress and pain reduction at schools, medical facilities, and community centers. For many years, her focus has been adapting classical yoga asanas to fit the needs of her students and clients. She has worked with students presenting a wide range of physical issues, including repetitive stress syndrome, heart disease, and cancer. Unlike many contemporary yoga teachers, Ms. Frederick does not believe in urging students to strain their bodies to "match the magazine pictures," trying to fit into poses that they don't have the agility or strength to do — and hurting themselves in the attempt. Instead she emphasizes working with individual abilities and needs. With this focus, informed by years of practical teaching and creative innovation, she developed "Yoga Therapy" which actively but gently works with each student's issues. Ms. Frederick returns to the fundamentals of classical yoga: breath work, healing, and self examination, and from there works to improve the individual student's abilities. "Yoga is about awareness, energy and breath," she says, "not a picture-perfect yoga pose." Ms Frederick founded Redwood Yoga in 1992, to teach public classes and private clients in northern California's Marin and Sonoma counties. She now lives on the Big Island of Hawaii, and teaches at the Wisdom Way Center. She also travels to Europe and the mainland USA, teaching workshops and master classes. In 1987 Ms. Frederick met internationally known author and respected spiritual innovator Starhawk, and over the years has worked with Starhawk as a close colleague. Ms. Frederick has taught earth-based spirituality workshops with the Reclaiming community (co-founded by Starhawk) for many years and is an influential senior teacher, credited with bringing body awareness, movement, dance, yoga, and breathing techniques to the Reclaiming tradition. A talented singer and drummer, Ms. Frederick has recorded two successful independent CDs of original and traditional devotional chants and songs: "Through the Darkness" and "In the Arms of the Wild" and "Sea Sutras." "Yoga Therapy: Pain and Stress Relief for Every Body" is Beverly Frederick's third CD, but the first to teach her innovative and healthy approach to living fully in one's body — whatever that body's appearance or limitations. Every body, in her view, can be "perfect." Ms. Frederick began her career as a dancer / choreographer, graduating with an MA from San Francisco State University and directing Imagic Dance Theatre of San Francisco. She has partnered for the past sixteen years with musician, artist, and
storyteller Doug Orton. For More Information:
