Healing Poses to Fix Your Aching Body

Master yoga teacher Beverly Frederick, director of Redwood Yoga in northern California and the Wisdom Way Center of Hawaii, has created a "guided practice on a CD" for ordinary people with common, painful problems. Drawing on her many years of experience working with both private clients and public classes, "Yoga Therapy: Pain and Stress Relief for Every Body" features eight series of poses that focus on healing.

People who work long hours at a computer, who sit all day at desks or in cars, or who stand hours on their feet — in fact, anyone who carries stress in their body — will benefit from Ms. Frederick's original routines, which can be done in as little as 15 minutes a day. The listener may go from beginning to end for a full work-out that tones and flexes the entire body. Or s/he may choose a sequence that works specifically on shoulders, back, or hips.

Several of these poses and sequences are unique, created by Ms. Frederick to help her students move out of pain. Along with the well-known "sun salutation," she has developed the "earth salutation," and "moon salutation" to accent balance and connection to the sacred. Yoga is currently the hot "new" thing, but Ms. Frederick often finds that it is poorly taught by "achievement-oriented" teachers and can actually injure people. In contrast, she emphasizes breath, proper alignment, and compassion for each student's individual issues — from there, strengthening and healing may begin.

"Yoga Therapy: Pain and Stress Relief for Every Body" features a stand-up poster illustrating the sequences. Instead of an inconvenient booklet that gets in the way of a beginner, this small, sturdy poster may be placed upright near the listener and easily referred to while doing the practice. Photos show Ms. Frederick doing the poses perfectly (an inspiring sight) as well as several of her students, of varying ages and body types, illustrating what the "average person" looks like doing these asanas (an encouraging sight).

The background of this exceptional poster is a beautiful Tibetan calligraphy of "The Twenty-one Praises of Tara." Tara is a primary goddess in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The "Praises" were drawn by Orgyen Tromge, a young man who is recognized as a tolku (an incarnation of an important Tibetan lama). Ms. Frederick teaches yoga to young Tromge's mother.

Background music to "Yoga Therapy: Pain and Stress Relief for Every Body" features noted musicians Chris Caswell and Suzanne Sterling. Ms. Frederick herself sings and plays percussion. The lovely music, a blend of soothing vocals, ocean sounds, Tibetan bowls and gongs, and traditional Indian instruments, on a separate CD, "Sea Sutras," in 2003.

"Yoga Therapy: Pain and Stress Relief for Every Body" costs only $18 retail, or about the price of an average yoga class. Review copies for media and distributors available on request.

Ms. Frederick is available for interviews.
